Joey Brezinski Interview
With the release of the new Cliché X Native Core Store Collaboration Decks ( Cliché X Native Core Store Collab Deck 8.0”, Cliché X Native Core Store Collab Deck 8.25” ) we popped a few questions over to Joey Brezinski to find out a bit more about his skating, his love for Burritos and kickflipping the Lyon 25…
NS: There probably aren’t many kids in skateboarding these days that don’t know who you are but for those who don’t, can you please tell us a little bit about yourself, how long you’ve been skating, how many years you’ve been pro and how much you love burritos?
JB: My name is Joey Brezinski, I’ve been skating for over 25 years, I’ve been pro for 10 years, I like to make fun videos for Instagram/Snapchat and burritos are the shit.
NS: You’ve filmed a lot of video parts over the years, which is your favourite? Why? And are you working on anything new at the moment?
JB: Hello Jojo was really fun because it didn’t feel like I was working on a video part. I was traveling to France a lot and the footage just came together. Right now I’m stacking clips with no real plan for a part.
NS: What is your approach to filming a part, do you have the spots and tricks planned out or do you just go out and see what you get?
JB: I always have plans when filming, If I get a trick in my head to film I’ll try it until I land it and I won’t try anything else till I get it done.
NS: We know you’re a tech guy with all those manual combos, is there a certain one you’ve landed that sticks out in your mind? Maybe one you’ve fought the longest for or that’s stressed you out the most?
JB: Almost all of them have been battles. It’s the ones that I didn’t land that stressed me out the most. That feeling of driving home without the clip super sore and depressed.
NS: Is there any parts that you sit and watch before you go out? What gets you hyped to skate?
JB: I like watching video parts from MJ , Kenny A, Mike Carroll and Gino. Those guys get me hyped.
NS: Who is your favourite teammate on Cliche and is there any young blood we should keep an eye out for?
JB: I love everyone on Cliche, but I’m always hyped to hang out with JB.
NS: How has getting older influenced your skateboarding, what do you do to keep that body ticking?
JB: Let’s just say I can’t kick flip up the courthouse stage like I use too, LOL. Red Bull has a training facility that I train at 2 or 3 times a week, it definitely helps me maintain my skateboarding.
NS: You seem to be a lot more heavily involved over at Dwindle these days, what’s your role and how’s that working for you?
JB: I moved Andale bearings out of my garage and into Dwindle for distribution. I’m the brand manager so I’m in the office a few times a week working on Thrasher ad’s, new signature bearings, graphics Etc. Al Boglio runs Cliché out of Dwindle and has been helping me a lot with Andale.
NS: Andale comes under the Dwindle umbrella now, how are things going with that and who else is involved with Andale?
JB: Things are good, I’m learning a lot, it’s definitely way different than doing it out of my garage. It’s hard keeping up with their schedule, I feel like I get one thing done and then we’re already on to the next catalog.
NS: It seems heavily based around your obsession with Burritos, what is your perfect burrito?
JB: Beans, rice, cheese and sour cream.
NS: Recently you switched up shoe sponsor and joined Biebel over at Diamond Footwear. How did this come about and what happened with the whole Puma Skate thing, you were with those guys for a while weren’t you?
JB: I’m not on Diamond I’m just testing some shoes for them since I’m sample size. As for Puma I’ve been informed that I am legally not able to talk about them, LOL.
NS: Being someone that is so involved with the social media aspect of the skateboard industry how do you feel this has affected your career?
JB: I think it’s great. You’re able to post a trick as soon as you learn it and get direct feedback from your fans.
NS: Who are your top 10 people to follow on Instagram?
JB: @jpjadeed @jamesespinozaa @addiefridy @brandonbiebel @teamburrito_com @daewon1song @vanstyles @chipotlesucks @pizzathepug @blackplaguebrewing
NS: How did your sponsorship with Audi come about and what’s the deal with that?
JB: They hit me up on Twitter a few years ago. Now I get cars when I travel, it’s insane!
NS: Last one… Are you annoyed you didn’t get to ollie the Lyon 25 before Jaws?
JB: No… Because I can still be the first to kickflip it.
