Baker Skateboards; Need we say more?
Andrew Reynolds left Birdhouse Skateboards at the very end of the 90’s, after some very successful years, including stepping to the Professional Skateboarding ranks, and in 2000, Baker Skateboards was officially born, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Baker is known for its raw, street style, anti-corp style, and in 2000, Reynolds alongside iconic early team riders Dustin Dollan, Jim Greco, Mike Moldonado and Jeff Lenoce, came out swinging with Baker’s first video, Baker 2G.
Baker 2g became an instant classic, really resonating with skaters across the globe due to its raw and gritty street style, while encapsulating Bakers ‘F U’ feel towards the corporate influence trickling into the skate world at the time.
The most recognisable thing about Baker as a brand still to this day, is the brand logo. The red and white ‘Baker’ deck graphic became an instant cult classic, and 25 years later is still one of the best selling graphics in the game. You’d be hard pressed to find a skateshop that wouldn’t tell you the Baker brand logo hasn’t been right up there with the most popular graphics on their deck wall for the last quarter century.
Baker has released some of the most notorious videos in Skateboarding since it’s creation, following on from Baker 2g, the catalogue includes Baker bootleg, Baker 3, Baker Has a Deathwish 1 & 2, and Baker 4. These videos not only showcase some of the best skating you’ll ever see, but through master lensman Beagle, also show a less serious, humorous side to pro skating, influencing a generation of skaters and brands to come. These videos feature an array of the biggest skateboarders of the time, and Baker 3 in particular, will make it into a lot of skaters top 5 videos lists.
Reynolds has remained the focal point for the brand, and he is well known for having one of the best eyes for talent ever in skating, and Baker is recognized as one of the most influential brands of the last two and half decades, largely down to the riders Reynolds chose to rep the brand. Over the years, names like Kevin Spanky Long, Figgy, Antwuan Dixon, Riley Hawk, and Rowan Zorilla. Reynolds has also always kept the brand fresh by flowing some of the best young rippers around the world, famously giving Kader Sylla his big break, and then turning him pro, before leaving for Violet Skateboards. Another well known young skater Reynolds has put on the map is Vince Palmer, aka @therealchickenlittle on instagram, if you aren’t familiar with his switch flips, get to know!!
While Baker has always been most well known as one of the leading board companies on the market, they also offer an excellent selection of soft goods, with Tees, Hoods, socks and more being very popular here at Native.
