Treatment Skateboard Collective – Ross Zajac Interview

Treatment Skateboard Collective is an up and coming new skateboard brand heralding from the depths of Glasgow and beyond. They serve up such a diverse and talented roster to the table, with skateboarding that can be appreciated and enjoyed at any level. Spend as little as 5 minutes with these folk and you can tell they’re a tight knit group of homies, forever on the shred and dedicated to the cause. We fired over team rider and co-owner Ross Zajac a few questions.

Firstly, would you like to introduce yourself and how you’re involved with Treatment?
Hey Jackie. I’m Ross Zajac and I am one of the owners of the company.
What was the inspiration behind starting you’re own thing and how’s that process been?
For me, I’d been a sponsored skater for a long time to the point I was part of the organising process within companies. Over the years I guess I’d gathered so much inspiration from everyone around me, combining that with getting older I decided I wanted to set myself up to be part of skateboarding past the point I couldn’t be a sponsored skater anymore. Myself and Kash have worked together on loads of projects so I hit him up and he was already having the same ideas. It was a kind of perfect time to have a go.
It’s been much more work than I’d expected. A lot of stuff to learn behind the scenes but it’s a total labour of love. It feels fully worth it and it can only get easier.

We know Treatment are based in Glasgow. What’s life like up there with the Treatment
crew And how long have you been there?
I’ve lived in Glasgow over 10 years now. Kash and Kieran (the other owners) are both from here. I love the Glasgow scene. There’s loads of different crews and they’re all rad. Treatment crew is the best! Before we told anyone about the company, we made a list of the “dream team” all people we thought fit the aesthetic we were going for and all great skaters that we long to hang out with and every one of them said yes. Couldn’t believe it!
You’ve released with two graphics available, who designed those and was there any inspiration in particular for those?
The original graphics are mine. My girlfriend Kate is an art tutor. I’ve always made art but during lockdown I had like an intensive crash course and that’s what sparked off learning photoshop and working towards graphics. The muddlehead logo was based on me having a panic attack! Making art and starting the company we’re both moves I made towards working on my mental health so I guess it came from there.

What’s next for the brand, full length in the works?
We have loads of great ideas in the works. I think there will be a full length video one day. We’re taking it step by step right now. We’re hoping to put on a few events in the new year, do a bunch of trips and see how it goes.
Finally, what advice would you give anyone that is maybe thinking about starting their own company or have aspirations for doing so?
Just have a go. Do some research and work out how things work. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or look silly and reach out to people who know. Even all the people you look up to in the industry had to learn from scratch.
Thanks Jackie and thanks to everyone who has supported us this far. We have a lot of supportive friends around us!
